Cotai Ecological Zones

The Cotai Ecological Zones are located next to the Cotai Landfill Zone, with an area of 55 hectares. They consist of an enclosed area called Ecological Zone I - located near to the Lotus Bridge, with an area of 15 hectares - and an open area called Ecological Zone II – on the coast of the opposite river side, with an area of 40 hectares. In the east and north sides of the Ecological Zone I, four bird watching platforms were installed. This zone has aquatic shrubs, reeds, trees and mud, and there are water culverts connecting it to the Shizimen’s course, next to Hengqin Island. Three artificial islands were existed in Ecological Zone II, where you can find four local mangrove’s species: Acanthus ilicifolius, Kandelia ovovata, Avicennia marina and Aegiceras corniculatum.

The Cotai Ecological Zones were completed in 2004, and a consulting firm was hired to manage and maintain it. Data is continuous collected on benthos, plants, birds, water quality and the environment. The biological diversity richness and food available there, have led dozens permanent and migratory birds to choose it as a resting or feeding location. There are 253 kinds of plants, 22 fishes, 11 mollusces, 108 insects and 21 crustaceans were recorded in Cotai ecological zones. The richness foods attracted about 137 kinds of birds living in ecological zone, some of them were endangered species such as black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor) and Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo). In the winter of 2012, 55 black-faced spoonbills had been recorded living in Cotai Ecological Zones for the wintering period.

The Cotai Ecological Zones received more than 2000 visitors to watching the birds and educational lane in 2012. In the coming future, with the enriching and upgrading the educational facilities, the ecological zone will  become one of the education sites for ecological and environmental education in Macao.
