Introduction to the Technical Visit

Macao Refuse Incineration Plant

The Macao Refuse Incineration Plant “MRIP” has a site area of approximate 45,000 square meters. The MRIP comprises of two phases – the existing plant and the expansion plant. Each plant has three identical incinerators with a daily capacity of 288 tons each unit. Currently, the total designed treatment capacity of the 6 processing lines of existing and expansion plants is 1,728 tons per day and 576,650 tons per year. Each processing line is equipped with the advanced Martin Stoker, together with a waste heat recovery boiler for recovering the heat energy generated during the combustion of refuse. For the expansion plant, it adopts the design in complying with the European Directive of waste incineration 2000/76/EC. In addition to lime milk injection system, the boilers of expansion plant are equipped with de-NOx system(selective non-catalytic reduction technology), dry lime powder and activated carbon injection system, together with the bag filter, for removing the NOx, HCl, HF, SO2, particulate and dioxins, etc.

The heat generated during the incineration process is recovered and used to drive steam turbine generator and produce electricity. Under a full load condition, MRIP can generate 28.7 megawatts/hour. The plant retains up to 7 megawatts for its own use and exports up to 21.7 megawatts/hour to the public utility grid. There are two residues after the refuse incineration process, including the bottom ash and fly ash. Their volume is of one tenth of the original volume of the refuse and this volume reduction is very important for Macao, as Macao has scarce land resources.

The Venetian Macao

As Cotai’s landmark integrated resort, The Venetian Macao, is part of the portfolio of Sands China Ltd., sees millions upon millions of visitors each year.

The Venetian Macao implements numerous sustainability measures under the Sands ECO360° global sustainability strategy, by installing LED lights and optimizing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, etc. In wastes management issue, the company purchased innovative food waste digester machines to convert large volumes of food scraps into bio-water, joined the Glass Recycling Project organized by the Government and had an ongoing partnership with Clean the World for soap recycling initiative. Thus, The Venetian Macao increased its waste recycling rate from 3.5 per cent in 2012 to 15 per cent in 2015.

The Venetian Macao was Gold certified by Macao’s Green Hotel Awards in 2014, and earned Macao’s first ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System certification. It has also achieved Bronze Benchmarking by EarthCheck, demonstrating the integrated resort’s ongoing commitment and efforts in promoting property-wide initiatives toward environmental sustainability. Its parent company Sands China Ltd. was the winner of the IMEX-GMIC Green Supplier Award in 2014 as well as the Green China Award 2014 for Outstanding Sustainable Development Enterprise. Besides, Sands China earned a spot in Newsweek magazine’s Top Green Companies in the World 2015, and is the only Macao company represented in the 2015 Newsweek Green Rankings.
